Alice, I love this so much that we're featuring your first piece in our @weareinternetpeople weekly email that goes out to 3000+ creators next week! I found it enormously helpful and I'm excited to share it with our audience. You've got gravity on your side :)

Ah no way! That is so awesome. Thank you, Anna! Excited to see the upcoming email :)

Alice, your thinking and sharing here is essential, and embodies your message. It seems to me the new gravity is being of service - focus on others - first and for foremost. Without wanting/asking for something in return. Focus external rather than internal.

Service in this realm is nourishing to the one providing the service. Gravity of others will come back but that’s not the reason for the service. It is simply to be a contribution to others.

For me, this is the distinction that illuminates for me in your writing.

I’m grateful to you for helping me, and others see it. 🙏

Thank you so much for such a kind message James. I appreciate you!

Wait. I really love the way you put this (though candidly, I’m envious that I have yet to fully pull it off myself but I’m still at it… started years ago with tumblr, and twitter, and TikTok… I just can’t land the plane. But maybe this time with substack?) at any rate, I’m excited to consume more and @Megan Collins (!) you must read this post about gravity versus influence

Thank you so much Melissa for reading!! Yes Substack is THE place to be, this could be great for you! But also feel free to message me at any time if you have any qs, here to help 🫶🏼

I can tell this series is gonna be a banger, Alice. It feels like you found your brand, and I'm happy to be corny when I say "Here before 1 million subs".

:) Thank you for the vote of confidence Jules!

This is fascinating and I'm glad you made it a series, too. Feels like "Exactly what I need to read at this moment."

Ah that's awesome to hear. If ever have any questions in particular about the subject hit me with it!

So this is why I keep getting pulled into 4 hour deep dives into woodwork instead of doing my actual work.

This is absolutely brilliant!

Thanks, Alice.

Maybe you want to restack it with something like this:

"My article has also been selected and translated into Spanish to reach new audiences."

I love the concept of GRAVITY!!! It's genius....the pull and the sense of weight. This one will stick. It reminds of this quite which also stuck..."I want more of him/her in my life".

Thank you so much for reading Terry! And wow yes I love that...gravity keeps us coming back for more :)

This actually makes me feel hopeful that I can just be myself and connect with others and that will work better than trying to please the algorithm.

Expand full comment

Totally. I'm hopeful in the future we'll see platforms that focus less on algorithms but more will actually *show you* the people you follow (rather than a For You Page style thing). If that's the case, all you need to do is connect with the people who do follow you, rather than trying to constantly reach new people.

Great stuff, and the Creator gravity idea makes sense. I honestly have seen it in my field (people come up to me at events and industry sessions and say, 'Hey, aren't you the person who writes that snarky blog on privacy?'

I totally get it. Now, I need to work on cutting down my density problem to get a broader set of people to follow along on the journey.

Thanks for this, and I look forward to reading your other articles.

Hey Carey! This is amazing (also snarky blog on privacy is such an excellent niche). And thank you! Let me know if you have any questions in particular, always happy to help. :)

I was so sick of the noise from “traditional” platforms that I had fully given up belief of the utopian internet entity that I grew up in awe of.

I wrote my first post when I joined Substack a few weeks ago about the trials the emergence of generative AI poses to the soul and the destruction of the internet it is causing.

Since then I’ve found posts like this that make me much more hopeful for the future of the internet.

I’m so glad there’s still strongholds like yours keeping the spirit alive.

Godspeed Alice

Thanks Skye! Likewise! It really feels like a "new internet" here on Substack

Hi Alice,

I really enjoy reading this article. When I meet people in person I can usually get a sense of their vibe. But for some reason, I didn't think about people's vibe in the digital space. Your piece really made me think about my digital presence and how that presence can lead to opportunities.

I got into storytelling a couple of years ago. I was just doing it as a form of self expression to process what I was going through. I had no intentions of sharing it online. But the host of the event asked if she could share it. Since my performance was posted online, I had the opportunity to have my story on a podcast, lead storytelling workshops, and even be feature in an article. The opportunities surprisingly presented themselves. At times, I wonder how did these things even happen.

Your piece is a wonderful reminder that even though the internet is so vast it's ok to take up space. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series

Thank you so much William! And so amazing to hear you're seeing gravity's effects in real-time. May more and more opportunities keep floating your way. :)

Expand full comment

So good! Can't wait for the rest. You make a great distinction between influencer and gravity. Most writers want gravity and not influence.

Thank you Matt! And totally agree. That's how most people on Substack seem to be leaning :)
