Your post on Bali and digital nomad life was one of the better things I’ve read online in the past 6 months. Honest, entertaining, aware. If anyone here hasn’t read that one yet, check it out. Makes you think in all the right ways.
This was the most insightful, in depth and honest piece I’ve read about freelance writing. Thank you for sharing your experience! It is really inspiring and makes me want to take the jump to do it!
Thanks for sharing Alice! I'm in year six of freelance writing and still managing many of the same juggling acts that you are, but overall agree that it is a bit of a dream job. I've got freelancer friends who are thrilled to add a couple hundred a month to the family coffers and others who are cruising toward a quarter million this year... Best to find what works for us and let the comparisons fall to the side once we get what we need from them. Cheers to year 5 for you!
Hey Alice, congratulations on your 4th year as a writer ! I loved reading about your experience. Quick question from a girly still trying to figure life out : what made you realize that was the path you wanted to take ?
Hi Maïssane! Thank you so much for the kind words. I’d always kept journals since I was a kid and loved to write. Plus, the idea of being remote and free to travel the world appealed massively to me. Not to mention, when I started applying to jobs in the writing world I couldn’t land anything…so freelancing kind of became a must. I didn’t choose it as much was forced into it. But four years in, and I love it here. Let me know if you have any other questions :)
Alice, I enjoyed so many things about this issue of Internetly, especially the ups and downs of freelancing. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your world.
Loved this line 'Don’t forget why you wanted to become a writer. As Neil Gaiman says: “Leave the world more interesting for your being here.”
Why I write: as an essayist/memoirist, I like feeling less alone and writing and reading other people's work makes me feel less lonely. It's very therapeutic, and something about Internetly makes me feel the same way!
There's nothing that stops me scrolling like seeing "Internetly" in my mailbox. I absolutely cherish your newsletter and congrats on your 4th year! Your writing feels like a countryside retreat <3
Came for the review (there’s always something special about reviews, right? They put your work in perspective and give you a way to see how others are doing), but I ended up falling in love with the Bali piece. As someone who lives traveling and spent a few months on the island, I can only relate.
Then, somehow, I found myself reading the Why We Break Our Own Hearts piece and honestly, if this isn’t one of the best things I read on a breakup, I don’t know what is.
Truly, congrats on your writing style. I really enjoyed reading your work this morning!
